Hi!
My name is Anders and I'm from Sweden. First, hope it's OK that I wright in the English languish. My German is bad. Anyway, I'm a guy that likes to fish and now and than build stuff we fishermen usually need to be effective on the waters. I been building some rods, mostly for fly fishing but also some heavy stuff for those saltwater giants like cod and halibut.
Now I will start a project for a couple of vertical fishing rods. This form of fishing technique has really boomed here in Scandinavia and are still on the rise. The common thing here are to use a boat when searching for species like Perch, Zander and Pike but new targets are slowly added to the list like e.g Arctic char and American lake trout.
So to my question, I'm looking for a spinning blank, not longer than 2 m that can be suited for vertical fishing from a boat. If someones familiar with the vertical rods from AMS and Jackie Farrona, thats about what I'm aiming for. So the blank needs to be quit stiff and with a fast top action that can handle jigs >20 g and medium plastics (10-20 cm).
I've been searching the net and found a lot American brands like mhx, Pac bay, st. croix, Batson and they all have spin jig or mag bass blanks. Havn’t seen any European manufactures though?
Sadly we don't have any one here in Sweden that sells blanks of this type so I can’t test them straight up.
Therefor I hope that you guys in this forum can give me some information of a suitble blank and where to get it.
Tanks for your time!
Anders

Hello Anders,
welcome on board!
Nice, to get a new member from a foreign country.
I´m not familiar with vertical fishing, so there are other members, who might answers this question for you.
There are not many europian blank manufacturers.
Sportex once produced blanks in germany, but they dont exist any more.
RST from germany produce blanks here, but there are rumors, that most of their blanks come from asia.
So most blanks today you can get are produced in asia, even those, that are sold by american companies.

Tanks for your reply and for your welcoming. Yeah, you're right, there's not much made here in Europe or US anymore. So the word manufacturer was a bad choice better to use brand. What kind of rods do you like to build?

I think a heavy MagBass Blank should do the trick for you, eventually cut off a bit of the tip.

Sounds like an interesting idea. I've actually build a rod some years back for a friend of mine. It was a baitcaster and the blank a MHX mag bass in medium/heavy action. It turned out to be a great caster but the tip of the rod where to slow and soft for pure vertical tasks. Maybe other mag bass blanks will be faster, I don't really know. When you mention cutting the tip, how much cutting are we talking about and what will it do to the blanks action? Have you done it yourself?

I have a Pacbay MB785 rod and I use it for all medium heavy pike fishing... I think it is well suited for vertical fishing too, altough I do not have much experience with this kind of fishing.
If I would change anything on the blank for this application then take a few centimeters 3-5 of the tip to make it a little stiffer.
